Jon Morosi reported this afternoon on Twitter that Marco Estrada was claimed on revocable waivers. A source with knowledge of the situation has told BP Toronto that the claiming team is one that plays in the American League East. The source was not able to directly name the team, but implied heavily that it was the New York Yankees.
The source also said that the team is believed to have claimed Estrada solely to block a trade from happening, and that a trade to the claiming team is unlikely to occur. The team has showed no willingness to exchange names with the Blue Jays to discuss a trade.
Estrada, 34, will be a free agent at the end of the season, and has a $14.5 million salary in 2017. He has pitched to 4.85 ERA in 24 starts this year.
