UPDATE:

Heading into the series against the LA Dodgers, the Blue Jays have made the right move, selecting the contract of Andy Burns and optioning Ryan Tepera. This leaves them with a true utility player who can hit lefties, and a proper seven-man bullpen with two left-handed pitchers. Look for Burns to get some time in LF in place of Saunders, or at 3B with Donaldson serving as DH to rest his legs.

With the move, the Blue Jays now have 39 players on their 40-man roster.

The Blue Jays made a roster move following Tuesday night’s walk-off win against the Texas Rangers, sending Matt Dominguez back down to AAA Buffalo and recalling Chad Girodo to take his place.

#BlueJays option Matt Dominguez and recall LHP Chad Girodo from Buffalo

— Hazel Mae (@thehazelmae) May 4, 2016

Girodo was optioned on April 24th for Drew Hutchison’s spot start, so today is the first day he was eligible to come back to the team after being away for 10 days. The move means the Blue Jays will now carry an eight man bullpen and go with a short, three-man bench. This would seem odd given that Michael Saunders and Russell Martin have both needed days off due to nagging injuries recently, but the move is likely only very temporary.

With Tuesday night’s game going into extra innings, four members of the bullpen had to pitch. The Blue Jays are also currently in the midst of a stretch of 29 games in 30 days, so giving the bullpen a fresh arm can’t hurt. Brett Cecil still looks like he isn’t himself, so getting another lefty in the ‘pen gives John Gibbons the option to use Girodo over Cecil against a tough lefty if he so chooses.

I don’t expect the Blue Jays to keep a short bench for long, as after Wednesday night, they will be facing two lefties over their next four games. As such, they may want to send RHP Ryan Tepera down – keeping Girodo to provide LHP depth behind Cecil – and recall a platoon partner for Justin Smoak at first base. The player who would most likely fit this role is Andy Burns, as he has a history of success against left handed pitching in the minors:

The other option would be Jesus Montero, who has hit .292/.341/.429 over his major league career against lefties, but those numbers are heavily skewed toward the first couple seasons of his career, where he showed promise, something he hasn’t done recently. Burns is also very versatile, which would be of value to the Blue Jays with the aforementioned soreness plaguing Saunders and Martin.

The 25-year-old Girodo has pitched 8 2/3 innings for the Bisons in 2016, allowing just one run in the process. For the Blue Jays, he has pitched two scoreless innings in one appearance.

Dominguez, 26, reached base just once, via a walk, in his eight plate appearance with the Blue Jays.

— Ben Nicholson-Smith (@bnicholsonsmith) April 26, 2016

To make room on the active roster, Drew Hutchison is expected to be sent down as soon as he clears optional waivers, which are a formality for certain players. This move comes in the wake of Chris Colabello’s 80 game suspension that has left the Blue Jays a little short on the position player side since Friday. John Gibbons told the media on Monday afternoon that the team was looking for a right handed batter who could play both corner infield positions defensively. With that being said, Dominguez getting the call over Andy Burns is quite puzzling.

The team should be looking for someone who can platoon with Justin Smoak and face left handed pitching. That guy is NOT Matt Dominguez. For his career, Dominguez has batted .247/.284/.384 against lefties, while that slash line is virtually the same when facing righties at .228/.272/.371. A platoon split is nowhere to be found in Dominguez’s case. However, the same cannot be said for Burns. Via BP Toronto’s Joshua Howsam, here are Burns’ numbers against lefties throughout his minor league career:

He’s raked at every stop he’s made!

Even more perplexing is the fact that Burns is a lot more versatile than the corner infielder Dominguez, and can play every position on the diamond except for catcher and center field.

But what’s done is done, and in Dominguez, the Blue Jays are getting a guy with a good glove at the corner positions, as well as some pop in the bat. In 2013 and 2014 with the Houston Astros, Dominguez hit a combined 37 home runs. Although the Blue Jays will likely try to upgrade at the first base position in the coming months and leading up to the trade deadline, Dominguez will be around for a little while barring any injuries. He also gives the Blue Jays another alternative at third base when Josh Donaldson needs a breather or is playing at DH.

With Opening Day fast approaching, the Toronto Blue Jays have begun the process of thinning out the ranks in big league camp. A number of prospects were sent out late last week, and not a few more depth pieces have been sent down.

Dalton Pompey was one of the #BlueJays reassigned to Minor League camp today. Wade LeBlanc and Matt Dominguez as well.

— Gregor Chisholm (@gregorMLB) March 18, 2016

The Blue Jays have announced that outfielder Dalton Pompey, pitcher Wade LeBlanc and third baseman Matt Dominquez have been re-assigned to minor league camp.

The twenty-three year old Pompey made his major league debut with the Jays on September 2nd, 2014 against the Tampa Bay Rays when he pinch-ran for Edwin Encarnacion. The Mississauga native made the team out of spring training the following season, but after struggling through 23 games he was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo and eventually to Double-A New Hampshire before being added to the Jays’ postseason roster as a pinch-running specialist. Then in 22 at-bats this spring, Pompey hit just .227/.292/.636 with two homeruns, two walks and seven strikeouts. The injury to Saunders last season paved the way for Pompey to be named to the starting lineup out of spring training, but his on-field performance – particularly defensively – suggest that he was rushed to the big leagues. With the health and performance of Michael Saunders this spring, Pompey was never going to get an opportunity to play every day for the Jays, so his development is best served by playing full time in Buffalo. Given the nature of a 162-game season, it is likely that Pompey will see major-league playing time again at some point in 2016.

Dominguez, the twenty-six year old third baseman, hit 286/.375/.286 with 6 hits, one walk and six strikeouts in six at-bats this spring. He was claimed off waivers by the Jays from the Milwaukee Brewers last September. A former first-round draft pick, Dominguez has some pop in his bat but is also strikeout-prone. Defensively, however, he is among the very best in baseball. If Donaldson should get hurt at any point in time (we’re going to hope that doesn’t happen), Dominguez should be able to fill in capably for a short time.

Leblanc, 31, signed a minor-league contract with an invite to spring training during the offseason after spending last season with the Saitama Seibu Lions of the Nippon Professional Baseball league. In 3.1 innings pitched this spring, Leblanc surrendered three runs on three hits with three walks and three strikeouts. He is really only here to help the Buffalo Bisons win games.

All three players will add depth to the Jays’ minor-league system and could be called up should the need arise.
