I agree that signing Cain is more advisable than ever now. We need an everyday, bat+run+glove player to anchor the outfield.

4/70 works, or maybe the Dexter Fowler deal (5/82.5)? maybe structured as 10.5,18,18,18,18?

I think a good plan would be to sign Cain to this sort of deal and then flip Teoscar (+ sweeteners as needed) for a controllable SP who can slot into the #5, with maybe some upside. Daniel Norris? Detroit's outfield is brutal. I think that's the only way to get the OF and SP we need, given budget.

And thinking about that a bit further, it shouldn't be a huge problem, as Bo, Vlad, and Alford would hopefully be very cheap at that time, keeping the overall costs down a bit.

That level of backloading could be a little dangerous (as it could affect abilities to re-sign Sanchez and/or Stroman), but if they can't find the money another way (say, trading Pearce), it makes plenty of sense to me.

If you agree to 4/70M with Cain, you could structure it as 12M, 16M, 20M, 20M, with a club option with a 2M buyout on the end. So he's cheap on the front end, and more expensive when Martin, Tulowitzki, and Donaldson (*tugs collar*) are off the books.

With Cain at 12M, the total 2018 cost for the top five in the outfield would be a reasonable 28.4M (12 + 6.25 + 5 + 3.25 + 1.9). A tidy piece of business.
