Because Desmond has value in the field and on the bases. Suppose Morales' true market value is something like $11M over 2 years, i.e. his contract is $12M in the red. Then flipping Morales for Desmond is (roughly) akin to signing the latter to a 4 year $50 contract. He doesn't have to be much better than fringe-average to make that worthwhile, especially if he can competently man the corner outfield and maybe fill in around the infield as needed.

Alex Gordon's contract looks pretty atrocious right now, I don't think a straight swap would do. Maybe if we get Kelvin Herrera back too? Or include some prospects on our end and grab Danny Duffy (4 years $60M)? Morales + Greene + Pentecost for Gordon + Duffy?

Which specific teams do you see as likely to regard Morales at $7.5M AAV as enough of an upgrade to assume the risk that his performance will continue to decline?

Why in the world would some of these be on here? Desmond? Why would the Blue Jays want a worse hitter who is locked up for half a decade. And why would the Rockies want a DH only bat?

What a ridiculous read.

I think that one mid-level pitching prospect and Toronto eating about $7M of the deal, would get it done. I think teams would pay around $7.5M AAV for a guy who can get you 30 HR. Freeing up money for 2019 should be Toronto's primary objective. But it won't be...:(
