Agree with Barry and Cole - a player like McGuire is in the twilight zone of not being good enough to happily use a 40-man spot on but still too good to lose for nothing. His 2017 offensive stats should have helped the Jays to get value as part of a larger deal with a team like the Marlins, who are looking to shed salary, want cheap controllable assets, and have less of a 40-man crunch (with their weak farm system)

I don't think the team would risk stalling development of a any prospect by promoting him before he is ready, and I certainly don't think you could describe any of the three as ready. The only player close to that would be Jansen, but he definitely needs more time to work on his framing, throwing, blocking, game calling, etc.
That being said, leaving any of the three unprotected would be irresponsible as well. I like the idea of an off-season deal, but the problem is that other teams aren't going to give us fair value as they can see the crunch.
I think that after a series of non-tenders this off-season, this will not be such an issue.

I find it off that you don't reference the 40-man roster crunch. Pentecost, Jansen and McGuire all need to be added or risk being exposed to the Rule 5 draft. Doesn't this kind of force the issue? Adding another catcher through free agency (without removing one or two) only exacerbates the crunch. So it seems likely that one of the above guys gets moved in an offseason deal, or one of them is Martin's back-up in 2018.
