That's certainly fair and a very worthy point. A guy like him would only even be thought of as possible if the Jays vaulted back into serious postseason contention and they thought he could be a real weapon down the stretch. That's also why it's not 0%, though. It may be VERY close to zero, but not an absolute no.

But it's worth saying, quibbling about the people listed as long shots here kind of misses the entire point of the piece. My guess is that they were mostly mentioned because they're noteworthy players and the author would almost certainly get questions about them if they were not included. Nobody (including the author) thinks they're coming up, hence the long shot dept.

You kind of undermine the validity of any of your comments but stating that Tellez will be left unprotected this offseason.

Say what you guys want about Ramirez, he's still not on the 40-man, so the team may prefer guys with big league experience for those spots over him. They may want a look since he'd need to go on the 40-man in the offseason, but at the same time if the club felt he were such a lock to help, he'd likely be up over guys like Mayza and especially Dermody already. That's not to say he WON'T be called up, but he's very far away from a sure thing. Greene and SRF are considered (and again, long shots and listed as such) because they're big armed prospects whose ability and performance could play up in the bullpen. Similar applies to long shot Tellez. He's a guy the club was high on and they may want a look, but it's not close to the likely side (which is why the author said it would take injuries for him to get a chance).

As for Fields over Hernandez, one of those players is on the 40-man roster and likely seriously in the mix for either a starting or backup outfield spot next year. The other is Roemon Fields. Their current stats in AAA are not close to the only thing the team will value when deciding on callups.

And finally (to the first commenter), the Maile comment is just ridiculously pedantic. You may notice that the piece is titled "roster additions." This piece is about players that could be on the team in September with added rosters that aren't now. Players on the DL (especially those with options like Maile) needed to be listed.

I mean, yeah most of those suggestions were terrible, but Carlos Ramirez 100% should be on there ... whatever you might think of his prospect status, he's putting up ridiculous numbers and will more than likely get a look. He's not a guaranteed call-up, but barring a significant regression he'll be picked up before Borucki, Green, or Reid-Foley.

SRF is beyond long-shot. His call-up probability is precisely 0%.

Tellez's chances are barely any better. Given the way he has struggled against AAA pitching, it seems almost a foregone conclusion that he won't be Rule 5 protected this offseason.

Why is Carlos Ramirez a non-prospect? He may be 26 years old, but he's a converted outfielder with all of 148.2 IP over 4 seasons as a professional, with a 2.48 career ERA and all of 6 home runs allowed.

Chronological age has little relevance for prospect evaluation beyond physical and emotional maturation. What matters is baseball age. Chris Rowley and Carlos Ramirez might be chronologically old for their levels, but they're still young as professional pitchers. From the other side, we (rightfully) slobber all over Vlad Guerrero and the way he's crushing A-ball as an 18-year old. But let's not forget that this is probably the appropriate level for his development age. That dude has done nothing in life except hit baseballs since he was 13 years old.

Hate to break up the party here guys, but even if the Blue Jays were to call up the two players you mentioned (they won't), it won't matter. They're a couple of 26 year old non-prospects.
