Hi Michael, thanks for the comment!

The Jays should absolutely not try and trade Martin if they are thinking of contending in the next couple of seasons - they likely would have to pay more to find a catcher of similar value. In my opinion, if they decide to go the route of trading him, they should look to create a new window around Vlad Jr. If they're able to extend Donaldson, keep some combination of Stroman, Sanchez, and Osuna around, and have other prospects like Bo, Alford, and Reid-Foley pan out, the next window could open up sooner rather than later.

Interesting piece Andrew. It's nice to hear a positive side of this abysmal season. Do you think the Jays will sell some other core pieces if Russ is traded. Would it signal the end of this successful run over the past few seasons? Or can a contender be built without Martin catching, despite limited depth at the position?

Hi John, thanks for the read!

Assuming Lucroy walks, the Rangers could be a fit in the offseason, but I'm not sure they would be willing to give up enough for him. They could use Chirinos as a back up since he hasn't had more than 338 plate appearances in a season and is signed to a dirt cheap contract, but given other areas to improve it might not be a priority for them.

You think the Rangers would have interest in the offseason? Lucroy & Chirinos both free agents I believe.

Great piece btw. I think Martin's contributions to the team are a bit under-appreciated.

Hi Arjonn, thanks for the reply

There are a few teams right now that could use some catching help that are in the hunt. I see a definite fit in teams like Arizona and Colorado, as both could make the playoffs this year and don't have a clear plan behind the plate in the next couple of seasons. Colorado has been adding a lot of money to their payroll the past couple of years, and Arizona signalled that they are buyers by acquiring JD Martinez.

Other teams that come to mind are Cleveland, Washington (especially if Wieters opts out this winter), and Boston, though an intra-divisional trade would be difficult. While its probably unreasonable to think that the Jays would be able to trade the whole contract, a market could develop for him if the Jays eat some money in a deal.
