Very true, Arjonn. My favourite occurance of this back when the Jays traded for Sergio Santos, and the prospect hounds were upset over losing Nestor Molina, who basically amounted to nothing.

Santos didn't do much either, but it was adding potential value to the major league club for almost nothing. That's always a good move.

Good thought, LBuzan.

Looking at Shapiro's history, my sense is he's careful and thoughtful about what to do with the Jays. They're not going to burn the whole thing down, but they're unlikely to really go for it either. If the Jays add or sell, it'll probably be on the edges, and not any big names.

Thanks for the comment!

It's tough, because the guys they should look at selling (Estrada, Liriano, Bautista) are guys they either can't or shouldn't for a lot of reasons. They haven't been great, and Bautista has a no-trade clause.

I'd like to see Biagini AND Osuna in the rotation down the stretch, though the latter seems really unlikely.

Looking at the return that the Tigers got for JD Martinez, I don't think that there is any Bautista trade that the Jays would make, he is worth more in Toronto. I think that there is some market for the older starters and I hope that they move at least one of Happ, Estrada, or Liriano and get Biagini back to starting if they see him as a starter.

Getting it off your chest is one thing but quite another to 'tell' a team how to negotiate. Asa negotiator, I love the movie Moneyball as a prime example of the interplay and risk-taking each manager must contemplate. As a writer with depth you know this. So take us deeper. What gems can you offer that take us inside the minds of the owner group on the one hand and the GM on the other. We are interested in your perspective Dave.

And quite often, we "validate" our optimistic opinions by discussing them with other Jays fans. It doesn't happen often because there aren't many fans of other teams in my baseball circle, but on those occasions when I've discussed possible trades with people who follow the other teams, it has always been interesting to see how much less they value the Jays' prospects.

Thanks for the comment!

And it's not that I expect every fan to know exactly what another team would want, but it can be useful to remember that both sides need to like what they're getting to pull the trigger. As fans, I think we fall into the trap of evaluating "our own guys" higher than anyone else might.

Good article. Most of the proposed trades I see and hear from fans fall into the trap of being built on the reasons why it should happen, with limited consideration of why it might not look nearly as good to someone who has the other team's best interests at heart (like their management) and who isn't viewing the Jays' players through Jays-colored glasses.
