Interesting analysis Matt. Really like the way you framed it. You'll probably know from my piece that I think the value of the last two are a lot higher, and also possible to estimate. But I get what you're trying to say here. The first four all hold together really well. I will say that I think there's an interesting re-framing to be done around 2018, where the only consequential decision is what to do about Donaldson. Truthfully, if they're within a few games by the all-start break they'll need to stay in it, and if they're far out they need to make whatever 2017 asset sales they can, and I doubt there will be too much debate about that... Donaldson is what will divide the people! As you laid out, it's hard to see them as an actual buyer unless they go on a crazy run!

I disagree with the methodology used here. Effectively, this piece suggests that acquiring a Top 100 prospect is more valuable than making the playoffs. While I don't dispute that prospects are valuable, to suggest that making the playoffs is only worth $8 million to a team is crazy. There is fan interest for the next season, merchandise sales, advertising revenue, ticket sales obviously, but more importantly, the goal in sport is to win. To suggest that potentially winning the WS is less valuable than Sean-Reid Foley is the sign of a flawed model.

I'm not suggesting they have zero trade value, there will definitely be teams that want them. However, I doubt their trade value to be worth accounting for. There's a big drop off in player value after the Top 100 to 150 prospects. If say Liriano and Smith are grouped together in a trade, maybe you get a return big enough to worry about. That's a big maybe tho.

Interesting method for comparing the different scenarios but it is ludicrous to suggest that Bautista, Liriano, Smith and Grilli have zero trade value.
