I'm confused. You call this a "surprise roster move" but then proceed to list all the reasons it was obvious and rational.

The surprising and inexplicable move was adding Dwight Smith, a move that was only possible because of Pillar's two-day removal from the 40-man, but would also predictably lead to a roster crunch at the end of those two days. Indeed, the likely outcome would be to DFA Ceciliani. But that raises the question: why not add Smith a day earlier and DFA Ceciliani then?

With Ceciliani's injury, I suppose the only solution is to put Ceciliani on the 60-day DL (unless you're allowed to DFA an injured player...? not sure about that). Because DFA-ing Smith would just look silly (Sam Dyson anyone? not that Smith is nearly the prospect Dyson was). Or Coghlan, but I imagine you want to keep your only spare infielder around until at least one of Tulo or JD are back.
