Definetly intriguing to go after andrew..he would definetly thrive hitting in front of j.d. Another player id love the jays to go after ( probably dreaming) is freddie freeman. Now it would take a bit to get him but the benefits would be huge. A power lefty bat, young, good defense and decent contract..plus his mom has t.o ties and has considered playing for team canada

It doesn't seem to make a huge difference if PIT is interested in prospects who are farther from the majors. The Jays' system is stronger at lower levels, but not to the degree where they can readily afford to out-bid other teams interested in Cutch. So, even assuming he's available, his coming here, while not impossible, seems improbable enough that it would be one of the Jays' most surprising trades ever.

For me, it is all about the price. I am a big fan of picking up ex-stars on the cheap, hoping for a rebound (see Liriano, Upton, etc). But I am very uncomfortable spending significant prospect capital for players who are essentially rentals (see Price, etc). Cutch has significant "name value", and he has very real 5 WAR potential in 2017 and 2018, so he might command a much higher prospect price than his 2016 stats would justify. As good as he is (and he is *very* good!), if I have to denude our minor league system again to get him I would pass.

You alternative about Happ is interesting, though. Happ to some contender for prospects, and flip those prospects for Cutch? Definitely worth thinking about.

The main reason the Pirates MIGHT be interested in trading McCutchen is because they know they will not be re-signing him, and the longer they wait to trade him the less value they're going to get in return.

Even if not to his prior MVP level, I fully expect the Pirates think he will rebound (for the reasons I noted), but because they won't be able to re-sign him and they desperately want to upgrade their rotation, he's their most valuable asset to either a) free up cash to sign someone in free agency and/or b) acquire pitching help directly through him.

And I agree that the Pirates probably want close to MLB level talent, which you're correct the Blue Jays don't have a ton of, but the trade concept is simply too obscure at this point to argue over specific players. Maybe they look at the Cubs roster and decide that 2019 and beyond is a better window than 2017/2018 and they in fact do want prospects that are a year or two out. We simply don't know, which is why I only threw out possible names without drafting a concrete proposal.

The thing is... why trade for Cutch unless the Jays believe he will be pretty good in 2017? Not necessarily MVP candidate good, but if they feel he'll only bounce back to average-ish, he offers minimal surplus trade value at 1/$14mm plus the option to repeat.

If he's likely to be above average, then his remaining contract would under-value him, which begs the question as to why PIT, presumably the team in the best position to judge how well he'll bounce back, wouldn't just keep him. They already moved Liriano and Melancon who accounted for $23.2mm of their opening day $99.9mm payroll, thereby significantly shrinking their need for further reductions just to save salary.

Judging from who they got for those two, they seem likely to want controllable MLB or MLB-ready players, which means the Jays don't have much in the way of trade pieces that fit. And in the case of Pompey, his appeal may be diminished because PIT already has a top OF prospect in Meadows.

So, especially after factoring in that he's a team icon, the most likely scenario seems to be one wherein PIT will want full trade value for Cutch based on his being a well above-average player for the next two seasons.

The prospect of seeing Cutch in RF is appealing, but I find it pretty difficult to envision agreement on a trade that will satisfy both sides.

I think that this would be a great move for Toronto, my biggest fear would be that if they made this move without publicly addressing the Bautista or EE situations first the outcry wouldn't exactly provide the best welcome for McCutchen.
Braun was another guy I considered, but there was a few reasons I felt he wasn't as strong of a fit as McCutchen.

I worry that the length of his contract might be a little much with the length that Tulo/Martin currently have, and the length that Edwin/Bautista are seeking.

Just as importantly, McCutchen offers a way to recoup value in a year or two through trade or a qualifying offer. With Braun, you're not going to get anything for him down the road, it's a contract that will end on the books and he's unlikely to be worth much, if anything, when it's done.

Finally, the possibility of a year long suspension for a failed drug test due to his previous failure is a pretty huge red flag with Braun. It's not like with the Yankees and A-Rod where they were happy to not pay him and have him go away for a year, the Blue Jays would be counting on Braun with little or nothing behind him. Losing him for 162 games would be devastating, and everything you gave up in trade -- admittedly much less than what McCutchen would cost -- would be wasted.

I would rather invest in Ryan Braun, who costs slightly more with Milwaukee and give them Jon Harris + Dan Jansen + Upton should Ryan Braun be willing to waive his NTC to Toronto.

Pillar, Pompey and Braun, with Cabrera as the fourth outfielder.

That would be a better outfield.
