It happens for various combinations of reasons. One is that even the best teams seldom reach .600, which means that over a season, they win less than three games out of five. So on average in a single game, a good team's win expectancy against a poor team isn't much better than 60%. With that kind of relatively small edge, it doesn't take much for the stronger team to lose - the opponent's pitcher has a good game, a good bounce or two, a ball or two where the difference between a hit and an out is being hit a few inches to one side or the other.

Also, certain matchups can be more or less favorable than others. As a simplified example, a team that prospers by hitting fastballs matches up better against a poor team with fastball pitchers than against an equally poor team with a lot of breaking ball pitchers.

Another is that even weak teams have streaks when they play better. And good teams aren't equally good all the time.

There are lots more possible factors, but I hope these few partly answer your question.

Ed and I are diehard bluejay fans. We have gone to several games in TO on a several game home stand. We have a hard time with the fact that Bluejays lose against bottom teams. What gives??
