Appreciate you taking the time to respond to my comment. I think we have a different view of why a player should be promoted. If in fact his 600+ PA's at AAA so far represent an accurate portrayal of his batting production, then he is probably at best a 4th OF in the big leagues. The sample size for his defensive metrics is too small to mean anything, so any opinion on his defensive prowess is just that. Noone has better info on his defense than the front office, and obviously they don't think it is strong enough to outweigh what could be a 80-90ish wRC+ kind of MLB hitter based on what he's done at AAA. At 23, I think he could still develop into more if given time at AAA and think that rushing him could be unwise. I just don't see how being a very mediocre batter at AAA warrants a promotion given his age and stage of development. If he were Ryan Goins age, then maybe. BTW, Goins has an .841 OPS at AAA, which I think places further context for where Pompey is offensively.

I tend to agree. Makeup is such a big part of the game these days, and that showed really hurt the evaluation of Pompey's makeup. Justified or not.

He "doesn't have anything left to prove" because, as you said, that has been his hitting level at AAA. The sample is fairly large, and that kind of hitter is who he is...what do more AAA then help with?

And he's not an average defender, he's plus, in CF. Every other current defensive CF option is below average at the position. That's why you do it.

Maybe not. He has been on the 40-man roster since 2014, which makes 2016 his third option year. Some players do qualify for a fourth, so perhaps he's one.

I think there is a little punishment going on from the Jays front office. I think the Jays were embarrassed when Dalton said the “playing somewhat scared" thing. I think the Jays felt he was saying that he wasn't prepared enough and that the Jays are pushing him too fast. I don't think that's what Dalton meant by it but I think some of the Jays front office might have interpreted it that way.

I wonder if service time considerations are in the mix as far as not bringing Pompey up either earlier or now.

It seems that promoting him now and keeping him up for at least two weeks plus Sept. would give him enough days to become a super 2. In addition, it appears 2016 is his last option year, which means he'd have to be exposed to waivers in order to send him down again.

So unless I've missed something, it looks like not promoting him for at least a couple more weeks will let the Jays avoid the possibility of giving him a fourth arb year.
