Looking at the teams here, it seems like most bullpen groups are a little top-heavy. Tampa Bay bucked the trend some, but they're unique in a lot of ways. I mean, their entire bullpen costs less than half of what Craig Kimbrel makes. But if bullpens are top-heavy, it's at least a little by design. It really seems like players like having defined roles, and knowing when they'll come in, and the nice thing about top-heavy bullpens is that the important roles are well defined. Kansas City has been regimented, and they've won a bunch with it, so of course they'll keep doing it. And any historical attempt at "bullpen-by-committee" by a winning team has been shelved quickly. Only a few of Joe Maddon's Tampa Bay teams have managed to do it with any success.

I think you're right in that the Jays will probably need another "reliable" reliever to supplement the three (or two, depending on what you think of Storen, I'm a little skittish so far) they've got. I tend to think you can find those guys- the Jays unearthed Liam Hendriks last year, and they may be trying to strike similar gold with Floyd, or Chavez (who will probably start some games at some point).

I wonder if the Jays' group isn't top-heavy, and how much this might hurt them. It's pretty common to see people focus on teams' top three relievers, as if they always pitch the seventh, eighth and ninth innings. But how often does that actually happen? IDK, but I suspect it's a lot less than "all the time". So it's interesting to see an article that looks at how the Jays' entire pen compares.

In a somewhat related vein, one thing that doesn't seem to get mentioned very often is the importance of a quality #4 RP. If we look at KC as the prototype, losing Holland didn't cripple or even severely hurt them because they had Madson step up plus Hochevar to take over the #4 role. Granted both of them were question marks at this point last year, it seems like the Jays are in a similar situation, needing one or two of their "other" RPs to out-perform expectations.
